Background

Since its foundation in 1986, the Penarth Pétanque Club has been based at the Kymin gardens in Penarth. The closure of the Kymin 2019 rendered us homeless and our new home is now at the South Wales Bowls and Recreation Centre, Sully. A new home for the club, a new name: South Wales Bowls and Recreation Centre Pétanque Section, but the same ethos and the wish to share our passion for the sport of pétanque with the local community.

The sport of pétanque originated in the south of France, near Marseille in 1907 and in 1910 the first pétanque competition was organised. Since then, pétanque has spread Our members have been playing in various teams competing in the Welsh Pétanque Association National Leagues and for national titles (men and women, singles, doubles and triples). Members have also represented Wales at international events in the UK (Home Nations and Celtic Challenge) and all over the world and is officially played in 99 countries.

We are always looking for the next Welsh Champion!

Pétanque is a very easy sport to start and accessible to children from the age of 6 years, adults of both sexes and disabled persons. Many of you will have played or seen the game while on holiday in France or picked-up boules in a Welsh pub for a friendly game.

At SWBRC, we will offer both sides of the game: the friendly, laid-back social game where the result is second to meeting with friends and spending a couple of hours of light exercise in good company, and the competitive matches where every point is fought for and winning is essential. Sessions for all ages and abilities will be organised and supervised by qualified coaches.

We currently have 6 purpose build wheelchair accessible pétanque pistes located next to the SWBRC indoor arena. The pistes are open to members every day of the week and all year round.

If you want to join us or learn more about the game, come and see us on Saturday afternoons from 14:00 or Sunday mornings from 10:00 at:
